Live Event

Documenting the Setup and Physical Install

  • Before an event setup begins, take a few images  of the empty venue from all 4 corners.

  • Once setup and with the actual event lighting, shoot some images straight-on towards the stage or main zone of activity, trying to capture all the work Code Four did with the intention of conveying the vibe of the room. Staff can be in the photo or empty.

  • ith the lights up if possible, take images of the complete  setup from the same vantage points you chose for the previous set of images. Think of this more in terms of technical documentation- proving to a client what we’re capable of, not so much the drama or vibe of the show.


Documenting the Event Itself

  • Snap candid photographs of attendees if possible. Find someone interesting and scope them out for a while and capture them in an interesting situation that shows off something Code Four did for the event.

  • Without drawing attention to yourself, document the crowd size with the stage setup if possible.

  • If it’s a speaker or performer you are documenting,try and capture moments that have a lot of gravity and plan for their arrival.

  • Stick to locations that you know will allow you to capture the main speaker, subject, etc and be

  • If you are shooting video, keep in mind that we are not going to be using your video for broadcast or the like- take short clips. Stand still. If you want to pan around, do so as slowly and smoothly as possible.

  • Get detailed shots of the stage and short videos of the lighting design. Elements of the stage set that involve timing (like moving lights, cues, rigging, etc) need video to convey what we did. Stick to basic angles that capture as much of the event as possible unless you are shooting a tech detall etc - we mostly use these things for video compilations and social media.

    • Front of stage and center is always cool.

    • Higher up is often a good choice for getting more context

    • 45° left and right

    • Back of house and center, including the crowd in the lower third of the frame if you can.


Print Graphics

When possible, have someone take an action shot of you installing the graphic, especially if you are, for example risking your life on a boom lift!

On site, once the graphic has been fully installed:

  • Grand / Large Format Prints

    • Get a wide shot of the overall print with another object for scale relation

    • Above graphic

    • Below Graphic

    • 45° angle left and right


  • Posters

    • Straight ahead to match level and center of poster

    • Wide including the advertised business if possible

    • 45° angle left and right


  • Environmental and Event Design Graphics

    • Overall/Aerial/Panoramic with as many of the graphic locations as possible

    • Wide with action/activities in the background/foreground

    • Day shots from front and 45° left and right angles

    • Night shots from front and 45° left and right angles


  • Barricade Systems

    • Wide shot of location and surrounding environment

    • 45° angle left and right

    • Front and center with some space between print and camera frame


  • Vehicle + Fleet

    • Get vehicle in an empty lot is possible

    • Medium 45° angle from front + driver side

    • Medium 45° angle from back + passenger side

    • Medium front and center of front, back, driver and passenger sides

    • Low, street level shot looking up

    • Above, looking down, square and centered as possible


  • Window

    • Wide shot of location and surrounding environment

    • 45° angle left and right

    • Front and center with some space between print and camera frame
